Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino Mashup by Gibberish

I'm a big fanboy of Donald Glover in part to his role on what use to be the hilarious sitcom Community and in part to his rap alter ego, Childish Gambino. The guy's a talent and I wrote about a really great interview with him and Rembert Browne in the now defunct Grantland :(  WHICH * TANGENT ALERT *  was so much greater than Bill Simmons newer iteration, The Ringer, a poorer millennial's version with short (it identifies how long it will take to read for all the too-busy-to-do-one-thing-at-once-like-read-an-article-that's-longer-than-three-minutes-while-checking-your-Snaps-every-minute-while-reading people) reads, slightly click-baity titles, and a larger glut of talent now that the likes of Brown, Zach Lowe, Wesley Morris, etc., are gone.

I think I get it, in Grantland they tried to provide amazing content in a ridiculous array of matters in sports and entertainment with long form articles of substance which was subsequently shut down by the powers that be at ESPN for reasons maybe more political than money-driven. Articles around the interwebs alleged that Grantland was not making that much money for ESPN but many more articles detailed the fractious relationship with Simmons and ESPN.

Who knows why it all happened, but Grantland was the best website I'd ever seen and may ever see. I wrote my obit on them a while back in which I had described the site: 

There were too many amazing articles to list, too many talented writers to mention all of them, but the site warped around an orbit of - gasp - journalism. It was journalism, not click bait, not profits, not sex and skinniness, that provided substance in a universe of trolls and tirades...

The site was created to inspire the young. It was created to breed writers and provide a lens into what driven, brilliant, and hard working people can accomplish.

I don't know if I would have started this blog without Grantland's push. I don't know if I would have started writing like a layman without Simmons' journey from stoner to savant. But I know it helped. 

SO LIKE I WAS SAYING, I'm a big Donald Glover/Childish Gambino fan. Glover has a new series on FX Atlanta debuting September 8 which looks to be very interesting and will be even more so considering Glover had complete control and hails from Atlanta himself. 

Which leads me to this very cool mashup with the beats to Gambino's album Because the Internet with lyrics and flows from Kendrick Lamar. Very, very fun listen. 

Monday Mixtape, Vol. 27, and An Obit on Grantland

Over the weekend, ESPN shut down Grantland, a site created by Bill Simmons and written by a phalanx of wordsmiths. It was my favorite site for four years and for many days, my only source of information.

There were too many amazing articles to list, too many talented writers to mention all of them, but the site warped around an orbit of - gasp - journalism. It was journalism, not click bait, not profits, not sex and skinniness, that provided substance in a universe of trolls and tirades. 

Writers like Zach Lowe, Jonah Keri, Katie Baker, Brian Phillips, and Bill Barnwell clearly analyzed the statistical and abstract in their respective fields, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, and football. I didn't need to go anywhere else - these were the best in their sport.

Jonathan Abrams excelled at the long form providing humanity to superhumans, Andy Greenwald reinvigorated TV, Shea Serrano did Shea Serrano things, Amos Barshad interviewed the world, and Molly Lambert wrote introspectively, thoughts spinning down the wormhole of every topic from porn conventions to Julia Roberts. Rembert Browne was the site's Zeitgeist, tuning us into LEONARD, opening up musicians like Childish Gambino and Mac Miller, interviewing the POTUS, and providing a needed voice in times when America was blind.

And to think I haven't even mentioned Charles Pierce, Wesley Morris, and Chuck Klosterman! But this site wasn't really about them. After reading many obits and Bill Simmons' own words (after he provided a link to a specific blog post on his Facebook page), the site was created to inspire the young. It was created to breed writers and provide a lens into what driven, brilliant, and hard working people can accomplish.

One of the first things I read on Grantland was the Oral History - "The Greatest Paper That Ever Died" - on The National, one of the most infamous newspaper flameouts in history. The newspaper had a legendary cast, including Frank Deford, Norman Chad, and Grantland's very own, Charles Pierce.

In my mind, this story meant the world to Simmons. It represented the brashness of these individuals to take a risk and just fuckin' run. Each individual interviewed in the Oral History waxed nostalgic on those days. They were the best of the best, and they knew it. So Simmons took the playbook and ran.

The difference with Grantland was many of these young writers weren't anywhere near the stature of a Frank Deford. But Simmons saw something great in each one of them.

I have a feeling years down this windy web, we'll get another oral history. We'll get the insides and outs of this remarkable four year run from the individuals who knew it best. And then we'll all look back at the productive and inspiring things each one of these writers went on to do.

In the meantime, I'll keep reading wherever you are.

5 Faves - Tame Impala

Parker dropped a few interesting tidbits, including:

  • Michael Jackson is his favorite artist ever;
  • Parker and the band were pretty drunk at their Coachella set (which I got to see), and he says he started drinking right after the show "to wash away the sorrow" of what he thought was a poor performance. For the record, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as their ACL set or show at The Fox last year;
  • Currents was written entirely on tour and is the kind of album Parker thought "indie snobs would turn up their nose at." The truth is now Parker has hit that Messiah Complex where everything he does will be loved by critics because he's made so much flawless music, so when he shifts gears and goes a bit poppier, all is forgiven because he's a genius. We'll see what I think of the new album, I will definitely have a review!
  • "Let It Happen" is basically about evolving as a person and musician, from his introverted ways as a musician on his first two albums to what he describes as being more extroverted these days;
