225 volumes should be some sort of celebration, a few balloons and whistles to lead in this week’s first track, “CABRA DRIVE”, by Kojaque. Damn, this song is tight, and I’m diggin the lingo. The transition into the bridge (starting around 1:30) is jaw dropping, and the move back out (2:04) is flawless. This dude’s due to blow up.

Kojaque is an Irishman hailing from Dublin, blending storytelling and style spanning soundscapes, resulting in music transcending the boundaries between the bars.

Nas released a new album, and although it’s nothing amazing, it’s still crazy to hear a rapper his age still killin’ it. Two tracks from Nasty this week! Jay Rock and Anderson Paak round out the rappers this week.

Post Malone dropped an album. His lyrics have always been boring and uninspired, but he knows how to sing a hit.

The Beaches, a band of female rockers, got me intrigued. I gotta look back on their previous couple albums and see if there’s any hubbub to intrigue further.

A few notable musical events this past week:

  • Kings of Leon released their eighth album. While after a listen, I thought maybe this one is a mellow release, but no, it’s a snoozer. Caleb Followill is STILL PLAYING THE SAME GUITAR WITH THE SAME TONE AND THE SAME BAR CHORDS THAT HE’S BEEN PLAYING SINCE Only By the Night. WTF.

    • "The Bandit” is a totally regurgitated track in almost every sense and instrument from previous outings, but I can’t deny that chorus.

    • KOL used to be one of my favorite bands. Their first three albums still kick ass and sounded nothing like I had heard before. I will always love those albums (and really, their two albums after that are pretty good too.)

  • Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak created a supergroup, Silk Sonic, and all that can be said is DEAR GOD YES.

  • M.A.G.S. gives me indie rock Frank Ocean vibes. Really interested in this artist.

  • The bass line on the first track, “Slowly” by the young Irish band, NewDad, is a heaping of 90s grunge and a dash of shoegaze. Some Nirvana with a bit Pixies and a smidge of DIIV. Good stuff.

  • I can’t hate on Post Malone. I’ve been giving this guy love since 2015 when I had “White Iverson” on Monday Mixtape, Vol. 15! And when he covers Hootie for a Pokemon movie, I mean come on, let’s all just enjoy it.

  • I don’t know who she is, but Julia Jacklin is pretty badass.

Monday Mixtape, Vol. 161

Party peoples, put on some headphones and enjoy an eclectic mix of R&B, pop, electro-pop, rock, rap, soul, rhythm, and flow! This mixtape has everything, so I hope you like at least a few of the songs.

And if you don’t, I hope that one of the things my Monday Mixtapes bring is music that you don’t like at first. Have you ever noticed that some of the most impactful music for you is not kind to the ears the first time you hear it?? It’s too new, you’re not use to the sound, and therefore, you don’t like it. But that’s just a first impression! Please give everything a chance.

So I hope you don’t just listen to this mixtape once. Listen to it many times and see if anything grows on you. The first time I heard Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Kanye West, and so many more, I didn’t like it. Time and patience made me realize.

Anyways, that’s my soapbox. I’ll see myself down and out.
